The camera is trying to find lines that look like the paper's borders. Sometimes it might think that the baseboard is the line. To fix this, try tilting your smart phone slightly so that the main surface of it is parallel to the floor. Since each measurement happens within seconds, feel free to try different angles!
Having your child wear a sock🧦 is very important primarily because that way our app can return an accurate recommended shoe size. We assume that she will wear a sock with her shoe, and the extra thickness of the sock actually does make a difference to the sizing, believe it or not. (If you’ve ever owned a pair of shoes that felt great without socks, but too tight with socks, you’ll know what we mean.)
We ask that you use non-white socks because it helps give a better measurement against the white paper, and socks also help your child’s (maybe) sweaty foot not stick to the paper 😜.
Depending on where you are in the world, you may use a different size of paper; in the US, the common standard is 8.5 x 11 inches (US LETTER), and in Europe and Asia the common standard is A4 which is 210 × 297 millimeters. These are the only 2 standard sizes that the App supports for now.
After downloading the app, please follow our tutorial. You can always re-watch the tutorial by finding it under the "Account" section of the App.

Currently, our App is only available for iPhones running iOS 10 and higher (iOS 10 runs on iPhone 5 and later iPhone models).
The App can be installed on an iPad like many other iPhone apps, but it is not currently a “native” iPad app and so its appearance will not be optimal.
We do not currently have an Android app available.
We have tried to design our app to give the best measurement possible, within the shortest amount of time. In order to do that, our App needs to use the paper as a reference point for scale.
Do make sure that your child’s heel is against the wall.
Don’t pick somewhere with harsh lighting, where there are lots of strong shadows.
Do make sure that the area is well-lit, preferably with natural, flat lighting.
Don’t pick a floor with lots of print or pattern on it.
Do try to hold your phone as flat as possible (parallel to the ground).
Do take multiple measurements each time.
Don’t try to measure on carpet.

Our app relies on computer vision technology that we are constantly improving. It does need a little help, so here are some pro tips:
You’re in a well-lit room, where the even lighting does not cast harsh or prominent shadows,
You’re on a hard surface (not carpet), and that the flooring is not too busy,
Your child is wearing non-white socks (this is not strictly necessary, but the App does perform better if you prep this step, and kids’ feet are sometimes pretty sweaty and sticky...),
Both the paper and your child’s heel are all-the-way lined up against the wall,
The short edge of the paper is lined up against the wall (for US LETTER, this would be the paper edge that is 8.5 inches long),
The size of paper you’re using is the same size listed under your Account Settings (for example, if you’re using LETTER make sure that the description matches under Account->Settings->Paper Size),
You’re holding your phone as flat as possible (the screen parallel to the ground).
You measure multiple times, we’ve made the measurement process super speedy so that it’s a no brained to do it many times in a row.

My child wears a size (#) in another shoe brand, but why does SpeedSmith’s size (#) seem to fit differently?
Please double check that your child is wearing (non-white) socks 🧦 for the foot measurement – we’ve found that measuring bare feet can result in recommended shoe sizes that are a half to even a full size too small.

We know that children’s feet grow super fast, which is why we’ve created an app that you can use to measure your child’s feet whenever and wherever.
We suggest measuring their feet at least every 3-4 months. If you’ve signed up to be notified via our app, we will also let you know when it’s time to measure her/his foot again.
Our shoes are designed made with a sock-like KnitForm upper, with tuned zones for stretch and protection, so even a wide foot should be able to fit into SpeedSmith’s shoes comfortably. If your child wears a half size, try to size up for some extra room.
If your child has two different sized feet (which is quite common), you should feel free to order the size that will fit the larger foot.

The SpeedSmith ZigZag Order program allows you to order different sizes for your kid’s left and right feet. Because we serve you directly and cut out retailers and other middlemen, we can offer you this option. But, on the back-end, it’s more complicated for us than you’d think so we’re rolling it out in “beta” to iron out any potential program kinks. Even though we ship shoes directly from Asia to you (another awesome FAQ you can read below), you won’t need to worry about any customs or duties on the order. As part of building this new way of getting you shoes efficiently, we work in the background to take care of all of that in a fast and seamless way 🚀.
At SpeedSmith, we are building the most efficient way of getting shoes to you, so that you get the most shoe for your buck 💵. You can return your order within 30 days, and we’ll pay for the return shipping. Please get in touch with Customer Care and we’ll take care of you. If you’re not sure if you’ll keep the shoes, please help us reduce waste and landfill in this world by keeping the shoes in “like-new” condition (for example, don’t wear them outside until you decide to keep them).

We charge sales tax on a state-by-state basis, based on the shipping address for your order. If no sales tax amount appears in your order total, we’ve determined that we don’t need to add sales tax to your order.
SpeedSmith is obligated to comply with current and relevant state and local tax laws. We monitor updates to those tax laws and so our tax policies are subject to change at any time.
You may have a tax obligation in states where SpeedSmith does not collect sales tax. More information on these taxes may be found at the websites of your respective taxing authorities.

How do I clean my shoes?
We recommend that for light stains and spots, you just wipe the shoes clean with a moist rag, or with a commercial shoe cleaner that says it’s safe for use on athletic shoes.
Can I machine wash my shoes?
Yes, our shoes can be washed in a laundry machine. However, you should make sure that your laundry machine is ok with this first...

For machine washing:
Brush off excess dirt on the inside and outside, with a towel or soft brush.
Throw the shoes in the washing machine on wool/delicates cycle (cold water). We recommend using a linen bag for best results.
Use a mild laundry detergent, and use very little of it.
Do NOT tumble dry, let them air dry.
What kind of activities is the Forge 1.0 shoe meant for?
Forge 1.0 is a casual shoe meant for everyday use. It’s stretchy sock-like upper makes it super comfortable for wearing all-day. We’ve designed it with a sophisticated look so that it’s equally good for wearing to school and wearing out to a nice family dinner.
We will be launching future shoe models that will be better to wear for more athletic and sports activities,
Why do you ship the shoes in a shoe bag, and not a box?
We ship our shoes in a handy reusable shoe bag that can be useful even after you buy our shoes, unlike shoe boxes that just get tossed or recycled. The shoe bag can be used to hold your kid’s sports shoes before a big game ⚽️, or for your kid’s rock climbing shoes 🧗🏻♀️, or for packing for a big trip 🛫, or for a million other things.
Because of our unique delivery model, with which we air ship your shoes directly to you from Asia, we don’t need to rely on the bulk of a traditional shoe box. These boxes are needed by other shoe companies because they stuff all of their shoes into a giant metal container that can sit on an ocean cargo ship for more than a month. Containers can get super hot, so between the temperatures and all the weight, shoes will get damaged unless a box is used. Also, the other guys need shoe boxes to fit with traditional retailers’ stock rooms. We’ve cut out all the cost and hassle of the retailer, so we also don’t need to worry about this.
Do you have girls’ and boys’ versions of your shoes?
Our shoes can be worn by girls, boys, and everyone in between 👫. Just pick the color that you and your child enjoy the most, and you’re all set.
